CSS111INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
CSS111 (Introduction to Sociology) introduces students to the systematic study of human society, social relationships, and cultural patterns. The course examines how individuals interact within groups, institutions, and communities, and how these interactions shape social behavior and identity. It explores foundational sociological concepts such as socialization, norms, values, roles, culture, and social structure, helping students understand the dynamics of everyday social life.
Students are exposed to the major theoretical perspectives in sociology—functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism—and learn how each explains social order, change, and inequality. The course also covers topics like family, education, religion, economy, and politics as core social institutions that influence behavior and societal organization.
By the end of the course, students develop a critical understanding of how society operates and how social forces shape individual experiences. The knowledge gained provides a foundation for more advanced studies in criminology, social policy, development studies, and other social sciences, while fostering analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to real-world social issues.
